we have a VPN between two Hospitals, both with Checkpoint Firewall.
We have a access applications that writes data over the VPN to a ORacle . The insert of 2500 takes 5 minutes.
Using a sql loader tht does not use odbc the load finisches after 5 seconds !

Does anyone have a idea why the VPN or the firewall slow down the insert that much ?

Perhaps something was lost in the translation so I might not fully understand your question.

But if you mean why a WAN connection is so much slower on database transactions you may want to read a bit about latency.

It it only takes 150 micro seconds turn around time on your LAN but 0.15 seconds on your WAN you may see that any database transaction over the WAN is up to 100 slower.

As VPN connections introduce packaging delays and such so your average turn around time is significantly higher.

CIFS connections suffer rather heavily as well from these delays.
