Ok, so you aren't on a local subnet if you're ping is even close to 100
ms. That means bandwidth could very likely be the problem. The real test
is to get a GUI client on the same lan segment and test to see if the
speed is better there.

The reason read-only is faster is that you aren't updating the map data,
which means you're moving less data across the network.
